“So, we’ve people shooting up the streets in Little Clegghorn now, is that it?”

Constable Tom Cartsome scratched at the back of his mousy brown hair. It wasn’t quite so impeccably in place today as usual, but then he’d probably been up against it after getting into his freshly-pressed uniform and making sure his boots were shined up. The call to report to the scene of a shooting probably had him racing across town to be the first one here. The press were already in town and they were all over this scene to be sure.

Cartsome was angling for the next Deputy Chief Constable slot. If a presentable face and strict adherence to the most obscure procedures were the only criteria, then he was a lock.

Molly had come to a point where she could tolerate the man, if only just so. Then again, she thought to herself, she’d just been shot at. She wasn’t going to be choosy about who came to offer their help. Paul was here as well, and she’d heard one of the other three officers saying that the chief constable himself was on his way. Things like this didn’t happen every day in Little Clegghorn, and thankfully so.

Now, Cartsome turned his suspicious eyes on Molly. “Seems you’ve landed yourself in a peck of trouble once again, Miss Wright.”

“Hey,” Dan protested. “Not her fault, now was it?”

“No, it never is.” Cartsome went over to the broken window, and then focused his attention on the one hole in the wall just to the right, where a bullet had actually pierced the wood and drywall to allow a sunbeam shafting into the living room. When Molly had seen it she recalled how she’d been standing in the path of that light mere moments earlier. The bullet would have found her, if Mason hadn’t removed her to safety.

Paul had been standing by the window already, taking measurements with a soft strip of measuring tape like a seamstress might use, then jotting down his observations in his little spiral-bound notepad. Cartsome leaned in close to say something, and Paul nodded to whatever it was.

A square of yellow police tape had been strung from the corners of Molly’s house to a tree and then an electricity pole. On the other side of it her neighbors stood shoulder to shoulder with reporters aiming video cameras and taking still pictures. Molly tried to avoid looking directly at any of them. What must they think, these neighbors of hers? Worse than that, she wondered what the papers might say about her come tomorrow morning. Molly Wright, in the thick of it again.

She saw Opal Jennings out there, talking into her little recorder practically nonstop. She waved, and Molly turned around with her arms crossed over her belly.

Dan’s arm felt nice around her shoulders. “It’s all right, Molly. Mason can explain himself to the police now, just like Paul wanted him to. That will help them find Gary Owen’s killer and put an end to this.”

She leaned her head on his shoulder.
